Fuck Your Scenes Introduces: Colombian Necktie

The self-described “negative metal” band Colombian Necktie hail from California and are re-popularizing the DIY route in the industry. For a year and a half the band have been working hard to get themselves to where they are now; recently releasing a music video of which you can view here, and even a self-titled EP. We were lucky enough to work with Juan Hernandez a couple days ago through email, and are happy to be presenting our interview here!

Can you state your name and role in Colombian Necktie?

My name is Juan Hernandez and I play guitar in Colombian Necktie.

How did the band come together?

The band came together through the internet actually. Most of us were East Coasters trying to find new bands here in L.A. so we posted on Craigslist and the Deathwish message board to find members. I met Ben (guitar) and Tim (former bassist) first, then the rest of the pieces just fell into place.

How would you say the band has grown since first starting out?

We have matured sonically and personally. The west coast scene is very different from the east coast scene so its taken some time to adjust. But here we are, 1 and a half years later better than ever.

What are some of your biggest influences? And what would you describe your sound as to those who don’t know your band?

Personally we all thrive on different influences that range from the most obscure metal to even some underground hip hop. Bands/artists that we enjoy together = His Hero Is Gone, Pig Destroyer, Tyler The Creator, Graf Orlock, Majority Rule, Converge. For a newcomer to Colombian Necktie, we are a metallic hardcore hybrid. We play what we want and leave the details in our live performances.

What would you say sets you apart from other bands?

What sets us apart from other bands is our live show, by far. Plain and simple, we go hard. We treat every show like its our last and play with everything that we can.

What has been the craziest thing to happen to your band so far?

The craziest thing was when I was flipping through the pages of Decibel Magazine’s October 2011 issue and I found a review for our self-titled EP! We had never submitted it or anything, they had just found it on their own and actually gave it a great review!

What do you guys try to bring to your live show that you can’t through studio recordings?

We actually record with the same energy and mentality that we bring to our live shows. We use all the same gear. Our recordings are never super/over-produced which is how we like it, keeping it raw and hard-hitting just like the live sound. Too many bands are over-produced on recording then you see them live and it sounds nothing alike. We try to avoid that at all costs.

What would you say is the biggest accomplishment for the band so far?

Besides the review in Decibel Magazine, it would have to be releasing our first self titled EP. It was our first statement as a band and something we were all truly stoked to be a part of.

Thank you so much! Is there anything else you’d like to add?

We are heading down to Austin, TX for South by Southwest in March and stopping in various cities along the way so be sure to come out and support. We also have a split with a great band called Seizures and that’s coming out in February on Irish Voodoo Records.

Can you state your name and role in The Ugly Club?

My name is Ryan Egan and I’m the singer/songwriter/guitarist of the band.

How did the band come together?

A few of us started writing songs together after some of our old bands broke up, only intending on recording some tracks together for fun.  We really liked the material and wanted to show people/play shows so we got a name and started acting like a band.

How would you say you guys have grown since you first started out?

We’ve gone through a big lineup change since we first started and the sound inevitably shifted from that, but we also started out doing more throwback, bluesy type rock stuff and didn’t want to be stuck in that so started really forming our own sound.

Jeff: I play bass and beat off. Erik isnt here but he’s the drummer.

How did the band come together?

Bryson: Well Matt started it with 3 others who arent in the band anymore. A couple practices in, he invited me to practice to jam with them and it stuck. Our old drummer left to play for his church. Our first bassist had a baby with his gf and our second bassist didnt work out. And our old singer went his own way to pursue other interests. All of these changes happened within the same 2-3 month span and me and Matt thought about calling it off altogether. But then Erik and Jeff came along and sort of saved RFC in a way. I took over vocals/lyrics simply cause there was no one else to do it and we just ran with it. Im happy with where we are and im glad to be with 3 of my best friends.

The band came together when Holden and I got tired of it just being me and him jamming together. so we decided to try and find more members that were just as detected as we were to playing music. We came across Mike as a bass player, and from there we began to write songs in hope to come across a singer soon. Well that never happened so Mike decided he would try out singing for the first time. From then on he was our singer, we then later came across Kevin who took the roll of playing bass for us. We did have other member come and go to try and give us a bigger and more full sound, but we decided that we sounded good and solid as a four piece.

How did the band come together?

I had been trying to get a pop/punk band started with Mason (guitar) since 2007, but we didn’t really follow through until Evan (bass) asked me about playing, he really got us motivated to start looking for more members. I played with Dalton (vocals) in a band in high school and asked him to sing for us, after that we demoed out a song and Jeff (drums) and Tommy (guitar) asked to play with us. We really got lucky with a great group that was incredibly motivated to start playing shows.

Fuck Your Scenes Introduces: Footlight Frenzy

Recommended If You Like: Fall Out Boy, Saves the Day, Foo Fighters

Footlight Frenzy are a band that as you can tell by the RIYL have obscure influences, which you can read about in our interview below, but it fits. Despite how cliche it is to say a band is hard to describe, I can honestly say it’s hard to describe Footlight Frenzy. Sure, the pop-punk influences are there but so are tons of others; espcially on their track “Bang Bang (The Artist Is Dead).” With strong instrumentals, vocals that are highly reminiscent of Patrick Stump and a full-length album on the way, be sure to keep an eye out for Footlight Frenzy this summer!

Can you state your name and role in Footlight Frenzy?

Brian Blake; Drums and Princess.

How did the band come together?

This is a long story, but it’s also kind of ridiculous so I have to tell it.  Rusty (vocals) and I grew up next door to each other starting when we were 2 years old.  Once we entered junior high/high school we went down different paths.  He went down the ‘all-star/pro-athlete/bad-ass’ path and I went down the ‘art-music-star wars’ path.  We remained friends but didn’t talk a whole lot.  I met Justin (guitar) when I was 15, he got me into punk music and we started playing in a band together which lasted for several years. Mike (bass) also went to the same high school as all of us, although none of us were really friends with him, but we all knew him.  He played in a popular rock band, was class president and also a superman athlete.  This is going somewhere..  While Rusty was in college he got really into music/singing/playing guitar and we sort of re-connected.  He formed a band with a few friends and I would randomly fill in on drums for their shows.  Justin and I stayed in touch (touching each other) and formed another punk band together when we were about 20.  Through friends, Mike came and auditioned, was awesome and became our bass player.  We played shows for a while until things weren’t working with other members and the 3 of us decided we needed to branch off, go in a different direction, and start a new band with a new singer.  Rusty was the first person that I could think of.  He came in, auditioned, blew us away, and here we are.  So pretty much what happend was we all grew up together (kind of), knew each other (kind of) but didn’t know each other (kind of), and now we are all best friends (kind of).

Uncle Joel’s Comb are an pop-punk/ska band from Albany, New York who have already released a self-titled EP, and are currently set to release their debut album, That Creepy Uncle, on June 10. So check them out on facebook and read up on our interview below:

Can you state your name and role in Uncle Joel’s Comb?

Alex Koste, lead singer.

How did the band come together?

Well, the four core members; Cody Okonski (guitar and backup vocals) Clay Kaledin (drums) Luke Olson (bass) and I have been pretty good friends for years, probably since around 5th grade. Luke and Cody were in a band, Only Chance, through middle school. In my sophomore year of high school two things happened. One: Cody, Luke, Clay and I made a joke metal band named Tears of the Forgotten. We wrote some short joke songs and dressed up super brutally and performed them for videos which would later go up on Facebook. This represented the first time Clay ever played drums. Secondly in my sophomore year, my girlfriend at the time gave me two albums for Christmas. They were a Reel Big Fish best of, and a Mustard Plug best of. After listening to them extensively, I decided to start a ska band with Luke, and Cody and Clay came into the picture naturally afterwards because of our friendship, and because of Tears of the Forgotten. The TotF page on Facebook is still up if anyone wants to check it out. It’s pretty ridiculous.

Our Message

A lot of people see the word “fuck” in our name and get a preconceived notion that we are simply saying “fuck” to a particular scene or genre of music. To those people, I hope you read the following. Fuckyourscenes.com is certainly not discriminating against any scene or genre of music, instead, trying to get rid of those. When I decided to call the website “Fuck Your Scenes,” I had every intention of covering multiple different scenes and genres of music. read more...
