The Great Southern Trend Kill: May, 2012

Well, it seems that I’ll have to begin this post on a little down note: once again, my guys in Apollo-11 have found ourselves without a drummer. With only one day’s warning, our drummer decided to part with us so he could join home town metal band, Jerolyn. This is a pretty double-edged sword for us because this has put a serious cramp in our tour plans and finding a good drummer is never easy, but on the other hand, Jerolyn are one of my favorite metal bands and I’m glad they have someone now. Speaking of Jerolyn, now armed with a new drummer, their upcoming album, Ruin, is due for release soon and a new music video is currently in the works.

Back to Apollo-11, though; we are currently looking at a few promising drummers and hopefully none of our summer plans will be affected. Plus, our long delayed full-length is inching it’s way to completion. One good thing about this month is that my booking agency/hopefully indie-label, No Pants Production, just put out our third release, which was by our good friend and rapper, Big Fody. Fody’s debut mixtape is titled 40 oz to Fody, and has 8 tracks with some of the most unique hip-hop/rap being made right now in the south. And this is coming from someone who does not personally enjoy rap at all. Praising a friend aside, though, I can honestly get into how he does things - by taking a punk-rock approach to getting his name out there, and that I can really respect. Being a good friend of ours, he’s worked merch with us for a fair number of shows, and since he’s usually on hand, if time allows, he gets to do a little free style or two of his songs while we’re setting up or tearing down. So instead of playing bars and clubs and what not like most rappers, he appears at punk, metal, and hardcore shows. Also, his work isn’t simply about the stereotypical rap lyrics, his mixtape takes on a pretty wide-range of topics: starting with “Duck Season, Rabbit Season,” which centers on conspiracies and the state of world affairs, and also features Llyod (Apollo-11) on guest vocals.

As some of you may know, Yelawolf is originally from Gadsden, Alabama, where myself, No Pants Productions, Apollo-11, and Big Fody are all based off of. Because of this, Fody wrote one cool track addressed to Yelawolf, reminiscent of “Stan” by Eminem. All and all, in my mind at least, the mixtape just comes off a lot smarter than a lot of rap being made right now. Honestly, this is the first rap album that I’ve managed to listen to since I was a kid. If you’re interested, here’s a live video of Fody’s recent mixtape release here. Another good release out of my hometown this month was Fight for Your Riot by Tiger Helicide, which can be found here - actual straight up hardcore-punk out of Alabama.

Finally, I was lucky enough to book a show for northern-Virginia pop-punk act, Cowabunga, this month. I must saw that these are awesome guys, so I’m really glad that this came together. They ended their set with a cover of “My Friends Over You,” which made putting together this show worth it all by itself. I was also lucky enough to catch up with the guys do a little interview, which you can check out below:

Kevin Spann Fuck Your Scenes- First of all why don’t you introduce us to yourself and the rest of your bandmates and tell us a bit about each of you.

Ian Cowabunga-I’m Ian, i play guitar and bitch about shit. Tommy sings and gets tattoos, keven plays drums and listens to hardcore, joe drives and plays bass, jordan plays guitar and finds the choice food spots.

FYS- So how did the band first get started?

Ian-Me and Keven talked about it freshman year of college and started writing songs. I was in a band with Joe before and he came along and my roommate was our first singer. we cut summer EP a year later and shit kinda happened from there.

FYS- Where did the band’s name come from?

Ian -We were really into this band from PA called bangarang and we liked their idea for a band name. since bangarang was taken, we went with cowabunga.

FYS- You guys have what 3 releases under your belts? Why don’t you tell us a little about each of them?

Ian-Summer EP was our first attempt at writing together. We had a year to write the songs and didn’t really know what to expect. we didn’t know what we were doing in the studio and we really wanted some heavy tracks. that seems to be the release kids like the most, but we were 19 when we wrote it. we tracked it in like 5 days too haha.
Something Left to Prove was a horrible recording situation. we had notime to track and the songs didn’t come out the way we wanted them to sound.
Swing For Fences was a emotionally deep record. The quality of recording wasnt up to par for what we wanted but we are happy with the songs
Stay Me Single is one of our favorite songs and features our two new members Jordan and Tommy.

FYS- You guys already have a new release in the works right? What can you tell us about it?

Ian-We are currently writing new material and recording at Dark Side Studios later this summer. With the new material we are writing songs that have meaning and taking a more serious direction but old cowabunga fans will still love the new Cowabunga

FYS- So how’s the current tour going?

Ian-The recent tour has been going great only thing is that Nothing To Prove had to drop most of the shows.
