FYS Interview: The Maine

image

On Warped Tour a couple weeks back, we were lucky enough to catch up with John O’Callaghan of The Maine. This year marked the band’s first appearance on the summer festival since 2009, and have made tremendous changes since. Once a band that fit the mold in 2009 with skinny jeans and long hair, are now an incredibly successful independent band that have never put out the same record twice.

This is your first time on Warped Tour in five years, what’s it like to be back?

It kinda feels like we’re picking up right where we left off, surprisingly. We were kinda, not hesitant to doing it, but a little bit nervous that people wouldn’t dig us. Fortunately, it’s been just the opposite.

Yeah, I saw you guys had a pretty big crowd out there today.

Absolutely. It’s been good vibes every day so far.

Is there anything that you’ve noticed so far that’s different compared to the last time you were out on this tour?

One of the cool things is, I think it’s called the Monster stage? It was the Hurley stage last time we were here and that’s what we played on. This time around they have that stage catered to predominantly metal bands, and that’s cool because kids have the option of going to see heavy stuff. And I feel like they did a good job on the warheads stage balancing rock-orientated stuff. Then you have the main stage which has the best of all worlds on one stage. So, in my opinion, I think they have done a good job of putting some categories on one stage.

What’s your favorite thing about being on Warped Tour?

Oh man, there’s a lot. The diversity in music is always cool, as well as the diversity of people. It’s always been a lot of positivity and that’s what we love about it.

A lot of people see the word “fuck” in our name and get a preconceived notion that we are simply saying “fuck” to a particular scene or genre of music. To those people, I hope you read the following. Fuckyourscenes.com is certainly not discriminating against any scene or genre of music, instead, trying to get rid of those. When I decided to call the website “Fuck Your Scenes,” I had every intention of covering multiple different scenes and genres of music. more...
